The Complete Guide to Laser Hair Removal in Malta: What to Expect, What It Costs, and How to Choose the Right Clinic

Laser hair removal is one of the most requested aesthetic treatments in Malta — and also one of the most misunderstood. Between clinics that overpromise, prices that vary wildly, and conflicting information online about how many sessions you actually need, it can be difficult to know where to start. This guide gives you everything in one place: how the technology works, what results are realistic, what the treatment feels like, how much it costs in Malta, and how to choose a clinic that will deliver what it promises.

How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target the melanin — the pigment — inside each hair follicle. When the laser energy is absorbed by the follicle, it generates heat that damages the follicle's ability to produce future hair growth. The surrounding skin is left unaffected.
The key word is damages, not destroys — at least not in a single session. Hair grows in cycles: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser energy is only effective during the anagen phase, when the follicle is actively producing hair and the connection between follicle and shaft is intact. At any given time, only around 20 to 30 per cent of your hairs are in the anagen phase — which is why multiple sessions are necessary to catch each follicle at the right moment.
This is not a limitation of the technology. It is simply how hair biology works, and any clinic that promises permanent removal in two or three sessions is not being honest with you.
Realistic Results: What Laser Hair Removal Can and Cannot Do
What you can realistically expect:
70 to 90 per cent permanent reduction in hair growth across a full treatment course
Hair that does grow back tends to be finer, lighter, and slower-growing
Smooth, maintenance-free skin in treated areas for months to years between touch-up sessions
Significant reduction in ingrown hairs, shaving rash, and the time spent on routine hair removal
What laser hair removal cannot guarantee:
100 per cent permanent removal — complete elimination is possible but not guaranteed for every person
Equal results across all hair and skin types — more on this below
Effectiveness on grey, white, blonde, or very light red hair — these contain insufficient melanin for the laser to target
How many sessions will you need?
Most people require between 6 and 10 sessions for an 80 to 90 per cent reduction, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the area. After the initial course, an annual maintenance session is typically sufficient to manage any regrowth.
Laser Hair Removal and Skin Tone: What You Need to Know
Historically, laser hair removal worked best on people with fair skin and dark hair — the high contrast between hair melanin and skin melanin made targeting straightforward. Darker skin tones presented a challenge because older laser systems could not easily distinguish between skin and hair pigment, leading to risk of burns or hyperpigmentation.
Modern laser technology has largely addressed this. At Carisma Aesthetics, we use systems appropriate for Malta's population — which includes a wide range of Mediterranean, Southern European, and North African skin tones. The Fitzpatrick scale (I to VI) is used to assess skin type before any treatment begins, and laser settings are calibrated accordingly.
If you have a darker skin tone and have been told elsewhere that laser hair removal is not suitable for you, we encourage you to book a consultation at Carisma Aesthetics. In many cases, the right laser system and the right settings make the treatment both safe and highly effective.
Areas That Can Be Treated
Laser hair removal can be applied to virtually any area of the body where unwanted hair grows:
Face — upper lip, chin, sideburns, full face
Body — underarms, arms, chest, stomach, back
Bikini — standard bikini line, extended bikini, Brazilian
Legs — lower legs, upper legs, full legs
Sensitive areas — all treated with appropriate laser settings and clinical care
Treatment times vary by area: underarms take around 10 minutes; full legs take approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
What the Treatment Feels Like
The sensation of laser hair removal is commonly described as a rubber band snap against the skin — a brief, sharp flick of heat with each pulse. Modern systems incorporate cooling mechanisms that significantly reduce discomfort, and most clients find the treatment very tolerable after the first few pulses.
Sensitive areas (upper lip, bikini) are more uncomfortable than larger areas like the legs or back. If you have a low pain threshold, a topical numbing cream applied 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment can reduce sensation considerably. Mention this when booking and we can advise on what to apply.
Immediately after the session, the treated area may appear slightly red and feel warm — similar to mild sunburn. This typically settles within 24 hours.
What Laser Hair Removal Costs in Malta
Pricing in Malta varies significantly depending on the clinic, the technology used, and the area being treated. As a general guide:
Area | Per Session (Approx.) |
Upper lip | €30 – €60 |
Underarms | €50 – €90 |
Bikini (standard) | €60 – €100 |
Full legs | €150 – €250 |
Full back | €120 – €200 |
Full body | €350 – €600 |
Package pricing — purchasing a course of 6 sessions upfront — typically offers a 15 to 25 per cent saving over per-session rates. At Carisma Aesthetics, we offer transparent package pricing with no hidden consultation fees. The price quoted at your assessment is the price you pay.
How to Choose a Laser Hair Removal Clinic in Malta
Not all clinics offering laser hair removal in Malta use the same technology, employ the same level of clinical expertise, or operate to the same safety standards. Here is what to look for:
Medical oversight. Laser hair removal is a medical procedure. The clinic should have a doctor or trained medical practitioner assessing your suitability before treatment begins — not just an aesthetician with a brief training certificate.
Technology transparency. Ask the clinic which laser system they use. Reputable clinics will tell you immediately and explain why it is appropriate for your skin type. Vague answers about "the latest technology" without specifics are a warning sign.
Patch test. Any reputable clinic will perform a patch test on a small area of skin before your first full session. This confirms your skin's response to the laser at the intended settings. Skip any clinic that wants to proceed without one.
Realistic expectations. If a clinic promises permanent removal in three sessions at an unusually low price, be sceptical. Good clinics set honest expectations and do not oversell results.
Aftercare guidance. You should receive clear written aftercare instructions after every session — sun avoidance, skincare, what to expect in the days following. If a clinic sends you home with nothing, that tells you something.
"I had tried laser at two other places in Malta before coming to Carisma. One burned me slightly, the other just did not work. At Carisma, the doctor assessed my skin properly, adjusted the settings, and explained exactly what to expect. Six sessions later, I have not picked up a razor in eight months." — Alexia from St Julian's
Before Your Appointment: What to Do
Shave the area 24 hours before your session — the laser targets the follicle beneath the skin, not the hair above it. Do not wax or epilate for at least 4 weeks before
Avoid sun exposure on the treatment area for 2 to 4 weeks before your session — tanned skin increases the risk of adverse reaction
Remove fake tan completely before your appointment
Avoid retinoids and strong exfoliants on the treatment area for a week before
